Renewable Energy (RECs)
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) enable individuals and organizations to channel funds to green power projects, mitigating the environmental impact of their energy use.
A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is created for each megawatt-hour (1 MWh, or 1000 kilowatt-hours) of renewable electricity generated and delivered to the grid. Purchasers of RECs provide renewable energy project owners with a revenue stream that supplements the revenue they secure from the sale of the project’s electricity. These additional revenues improve renewable energy project economics, increasing their competitiveness with fossil fuels like coal and natural gas.
Customers who choose to participate in the program can select from a variety of contribution options, regardless of their billed monthly energy usage. The cost for each Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) will be in addition to the customer’s normal monthly electric bill. HEC will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates on the participating customer’s behalf in the amount specified.
When you enroll, your monthly electricity bill will display a separate line item with the additional charge for HEC Renewable Energy Certificate. HEC does not make a profit on Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). You can choose to add as much as you want per month ($2, $4, $6, $8 or other). Every $10.00 contributed to this program will add a 1000 kWh block of Renewable Energy to the grid.
