Within the Home
- Extension cords should only be used as a temporary basis and never for permanent wiring. Carefully examine all extension cords to make sure they are not frayed or cracked. Cords should not be placed under rugs or carpet, and should always be placed in low traffic areas. Extension cords should have safety closures to help prevent shock hazards.
- Check the wattage of bulbs in all light fixtures to make sure the bulbs are the right size for the fixture. Never use a bulb that has a higher wattage than recommended. Make sure the bulb is secure in the fixture as loose bulbs may overheat.
- Make sure outlets are not overloaded. Install safety covers on all unused outlets that are accessible to children.
- Never leave plugged in appliances where they may fall in water. If an appliance should come in contact with water, never reach in to get it! First, turn off the breaker, then unplug the appliance. Do not attempt to use the appliance until it has been examined by a qualified repairman. Unplug all appliances before cleaning.
Outside
- Stay away from downed power lines. Please call Harrisonburg Electric Commission immediately at (540) 434-5361 to report any downed power lines within the city.
- Do NOT place signs on electric poles! This can be extremely dangerous for lineman.
- Never use metal ladders or other metal equipment near power lines. Always look up and make sure the equipment you are using is not coming in contact with the power lines.
- Do not use electric powered mowers on wet grass. Make sure all tools and equipment to be used outdoors are approved for outdoor use.
- Keep electrical appliances and toys away from water hoses and sprinklers.
- Verify location of all buried or embedded electrical circuits before digging or cutting.
