Engineering Department
The Engineering Department at Harrisonburg Electric Commission is responsible for a variety of activities that revolve around providing service to our customers. We meet with builders, contractors and homeowners to assist in planning and scheduling all new electric services. Service upgrades and service changes are also handled through this department. We plan and engineer all new construction of HEC facilities, both overhead and underground, using the input of the customers and the developers. In addition to these services, we are responsible for processing tree trimming requests, street light maintenance and other service requests including locating our underground electric facilities for the Miss Utility one call system.
There are several other functions that are not directly related to our customers that are important to our overall performance and system reliability that stem from the Engineering Department. We monitor all of our substation equipment using a state of the art Supervisory and Data Acquisition System (SCADA). This allows us to monitor the system voltages maintained at the substation level as well as respond more quickly to outages. Use of this system assists us in preventing outages by allowing us to monitor the loads on our circuits, to ensure our equipment does not become overloaded. The Engineering Department at Harrisonburg Electric Commission is also responsible for maintaining all of our system maps and one line drawings that are used most often in the restoration of power in subdivisions with underground utilities.
